Note | Edward was born around 1819, he was christened that year in the small village of Bletsoe, in Bedfordshire, England, where his family were then living. At the time of the 1841 census, Edward (aged 22) was living with his parents at Whitwick Green, a small hamlet just outside Bletsoe. He was working as an agricultural labourer. Later in 1841, Edward was married to Elizabeth CHILDS. They were married at the Church of England parish church in Bletsoe by the Rector J.T. DAY. Elizabeth was a lacemaker from Bletsoe. The witnesses at the wedding were William DARLOW and Edward's sister, Edie ROWNEY. William was around 22 years old and Elizabeth around 27 years of age when they married. In the 1851 census, Edward (aged 32) and Elizabeth (aged 37), were living next door to Edward's parents at Whitwick Green. Edward was employed as an agricultural labourer and Elizabeth was working as a lacemaker. They had three children at that time; Sarah (aged 6), who was also working as a lacemaker, William (aged 4), and baby Thomas (aged 1). Also living with Edward and Elizabeth at that time was Edward's elderly great uncle, Nicholas KING (aged 83). Nicholas was described as an agricultural labourer/pauper. It appears that Elizabeth died in 1854 at around 40 years of age. She died in the Bedford registration district. In the 1861 census, Edward (aged 42), then a widower, and his children were living in the same house as his parents at Whitwick Green, although they were recorded in the census as a separate household. Edward was still working as an agricultural labourer at that time. His four children were all unmarried and living with him; Sarah (aged 18) was a lacemaker, William (aged 14) and Thomas (aged 12) were both farm hands, and Charles (aged 9) was attending school. In the 1871 census, Edward (aged 55) was living at Whitwick Green with his unmarried son William (aged 25). They were both employed as agricultural labourers. In the 1881 census, Edward (aged 69) was living alone at Whitwick Green. He was still working as an agricultural labourer. Edward died later in the year of 1881. His age was believed to have been 69 when he died, but it would seem that he was actually around 62 years of age. |
