Note | Susan's origins are not known with certainty, appart from the fact that she was born in Bedfordshire around 1771. Her grandson Edward ROWNEY had an elderly uncle named Nicholas KING living with him at Whitwick Green, in Bedfordshire, around the time of the 1851 census. From his age, Nicholas appears to have been born around 1768, and his place of birth was given as Bletsoe, a nearby village in Bedfordshire. It seems likely, but is not certain, that Nicholas would have been a brother to Susan, so perhaps we can presume that the KING family were residents of the Bletsoe area, and that Susan herself may have been born there. Nicholas was the son of Robert and Elizabeth KING of Bletsoe. From the IGI, Robert and Elizabeth's children appear to have been; Elizabeth (12 Nov 1764), Robert (19 Apr 1767), Nicholas (29 Jan 1769), Rose (23 Jan 1771), George (26 Nov 1775), Ann or Hannah (27 Apr 1777), and Ann (24 Sep 1780). Susan does not appear among them, which is surprising, but there does appear to be a sufficient gap between Rose and George to allow for the possibility that she may have been born during this period, although not recorded at Bletsoe. This hypothesis fits neatly with the known facts, and seems the most likely explanation. Note: There also seems to have been a John KING (b. c.1773 of Bletsoe) who was married in Bletsoe in 1798 and named his first son Robert, so he would also appear to be a missing child from this family from the same period as Susan. Another possibility is that Susan was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth KING of Wilshamstead. From the IGI, their children appear to have been; Thomas (13 Nov 1761), Elizabeth (5 Aug 1764), Judy (29 Sep 1766), John (22 Apr 1768), James (25 Aug 1770), and Susannah (10 May 1772). Once again, the facts seem to fit nicely, and this would also provide a family connection to Wilshamstead, where Susan's son John was later mysteriously married. The problem with this theory is that Nicholas KING is identified clearly as an uncle in the 1851 census, and no obvious connection is evident between the KING families of Bletsoe and Wilshamstead, so this explanation seems less convincing. |
