Note | In the 1891 census, Joseph (aged 35) and Eliza (aged 30) were living at 8 Jones Row, in the town of Irchester, near Wellingborough, in Northamptonshire, England. Joseph was working as a shoe finisher. There were two children in their household; Florence R. CHURCH (aged 1) who was described as a niece of Joseph who had been born in Wellingborough, and Alfred CHURCH (aged 11) who was described as a nephew of Joseph also born in Wellingborough. It is possible the boy named Alfred was the same boy named as a sibling of Joseph, living with his parents in the 1881 census. It may be that Alfred was an illegitimate child of one of Joseph's sisters. (Florence seems to have been the daughter of a woman named Sarah, who was married to Joseph TEAR in the 1901 census, and had siblings Charles CHURCH and Alice CHURCH - her exact relationship to Joseph's father George has not yet been determined, but she would not appear to have been a descendant and therefore not a ROWNEY.) In the 1901 census, Joseph (aged 45) and Eliza (aged 40) were living on Townwell Lane, in Irchester. Joseph was employed as a carter. They had two children boarding with them; Alfred JAMES (aged 4), who was born in Wellingborough, and William JAMES (aged 2) who was born in Cambridge. A spinster named Ann KNIGHT (aged 50) was also boarding with them. She was born in Irchester and may have been related to Eliza. Ann was working as a domestic servant. There was also a visitor in the household; Lucy TIBBY (aged 28), who was an unmarried washerwoman from Bozeat, in Northamptonshire. |
