Note | John was born in 1853 in the hamlet of Radwell, near the village of Felmersham, in Bedfordshire, England In the 1861 census, John (aged 7) was at home with his parents in Radwell. He was attending school at that time. In the 1871 census, John (aged 17) was living at his parents' home in Radwell. He was employed as a miller's labourer. In the 1881 census, John (aged 27) and Maria (aged 34) were living in Radwell. John was employed as a coal wharf clerk and Maria was a lace maker. They had two children at home; John (aged 7) and Arthur (aged 6), who were both attending school. In the 1891 census, John (aged 37) and Maria (aged 34) were living in the parish of Felmersham, probably still in the hamlet of Radwell. John was employed as a coal yard labourer. They had four children at home at that time; John (aged 17) was described as a carter with horse, Arthur (aged 16) was a shoemaker, May (aged 8) was attending school, and baby Barnet (aged 1) completed their family. Maria died in 1894 at the age of 47. She died in the Bedford registration district. In the 1901 census, John (aged 47) was a widower and was living in the village of Rushden, in Northamptonshire. He was employed as a carter. He was boarding with the young family of James WOODS (aged 27), a shoemaker who lived at 13 Glassbrook Street, in Rushden. James and his wife had two children. John's fate has not yet been determined. |
