Note | Maria ROWNEY was twice granted relief by the South Australian Destitute Asylum. The first occasion was on 29 Aug 1855, when she was 30 years of age. She was living at Campbelltown (SA) at that time and had four children in her care. She claimed to have been destitute due to the absence of her husband, who was said to have been away at "the diggings". The second occasion occurred on 1 Dec 1856, when Maria was aged 31. She was living at Bowden (SA) at that time and had four children. Her husband, who she claimed had been away for 2ư years, had sent her £5 which had allowed her to live without relief for a time, but the money had run out and she needed help again. On both occasions she was assisted "outdoors" which presumably means that she had her own place of residence and did not receive accommodation. Maria's applications for relief payments indicate that she arrived in South Australia aboard the "Isabella Watson" in 1845. This was the same voyage which brought her future husband William ROWNEY and his brothers to South Australia. Maria was travelling with her married sister Sophia, Sophia's husband Basil PORTER, her brother Jonathon, and younger sister Mary. The PORTER family settled around Bowden, and Jonathon eventually settled around Darley, near Maria and William, and was also a market gardener. Maria's married siblings Reuben and Sarah also came to Australia separately a few years later, in 1849. |
