| Note | Jesse was born in 1840, probably around the village of Thurleigh, in Bedfordshire, where his parents were living at that time. Nothing more is known of Jesse with certainty. His mother, Mary CLAYTON, died in 1844, when Jesse would have been only around 4 years old. His father, Thomas CLAYTON, later remarried in 1847, to Edith ROWNEY. In 1849, the CLAYTON family emigrated to South Australia aboard the "Ascendant". The list of passengers indicates that Thomas and Edith CLAYTON were accompanied by three children, so it is assumed that Jesse was among them, however no record of him in Australia has been identified to date. It is really not known whether he may in fact have died young, perhaps even in infancy before the family left England, which would also mean that there may be another as yet unidentified CLAYTON child. |
