Occupation

Coal Miner Hewer.

Note

In the 1901 census, John (aged 25) and Mary (aged 22) were boarding with the HAYES family at 27 Wolverhampton Road, in Cannock, Staffordshire, England. John was working as a coal miner. Their host family consisted of Charles HAYES (aged 31), the head of the household, who was a coal miner, and who may have been related to Mary. Mary and Charles were both born in the same place, and John was described as a "son-in-law", although the names and ages do not really seem to support this relationship in any obvious way. Also in the household were Charles' wife, Charlotte (aged 33), who was from Wolverhampton, in Staffordshire, and their two children; Nellie HAYES (aged 8) and Willie HAYES (aged 5). There was also another boarder, Benjamin HARRISON (aged 20), an unmarried man, who was also working as a coal miner, and judging from his name, he may also have been related to Mary in some way.
