Note | Samuel was born in the June quarter of 1864 in the hamlet of Radwell, in Bedfordshire, England. In the 1871 census, Samuel (aged 6) was at his parents home in Radwell. He was attending school at that time. In the 1881 census, Samuel (aged 16), was living with his parents at their home in nearby Felmersham, in Bedfordshire. He was employed as a domestic gardener. Samuel was married to Agnes HALES of Melchbourne, Bedfordshire, in the Bedford registration district in the September quarter of 1890. They appear to have moved to Yorkshire soon after they were married. In the 1891 census, Samuel (aged 26) and Agnes (aged 33) were living at No. 5, 17th Avenue, in Wortley, near Leeds, in Yorkshire. They were the only occupants of their home. Samuel was employed as a railway porter. Samuel and Agnes had a daughter Nora, who was born in Leeds around 1892. Samuel seems to have died before the 1901 census. The most likely record from the index describes the death of a man named Samuel SWANNELL in the June quarter of 1898 in the Bedford registration district at the age of 33. This suggests that Samuel had returned from Yorkshire before dying. His name is quite common in Bedfordshire however, so it is possible that this death does not correspond to the same man, although it seems likely. In the 1901 census, Agnes (aged 42) was a widow and was a domestic housekeeper at the home of bachelors Frank Hope LANG (aged 25) and John Sidney ADAMS (aged 35), who were described as school tutors. They lived in the 'Masthead' cottage in the parish of Frant, in Sussex. Nora (aged 9) was also present in the household. |
