Note | William was born at Whitwick Green, a rural district near the village of Bletsoe, in Bedfordshire, England, around 1846. He was christened in Bletsoe. He probably lived most of his early life around Whitwick Green, where his father was employed as a farm labourer. His mother seems to have died at an early age, although the exact date has not been determined. In the 1861 census, William (aged 14) was living with his father and siblings at Whitwick Green. William was employed as a farm hand at that time. In the 1871 census, William (aged 25) was living with his father at Whitwick Green. He was employed as an agricultural labourer. William was married to Emma FENSOM in the September quarter of 1871 in the Saint Neots District. The Saint Neots District comprised areas in the counties of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Huntingdonshire. Emma was from the village of Petty in Huntingdonshire. She was about 21 years old when they married, and William was about 25 years of age. Their first known child, Naomi, was born at Whitwick Green in 1873. Their next child, Edith, was born in 1878 at Roystone, in Yorkshire, England. This would indicate that William and Emma moved their family from Bedfordshire to Yorkshire at some time between 1873 and 1878. In the 1881 census, William (age of 32 given) and Emma (aged 31) were living at 1 Hills Row, in Roystone. William was employed as a colliery labourer. Their two known children, Naomi (aged 8) and Edith (aged 3), were also present. Naomi was attending school at that time. They were the sole occupants of their dwelling. In the 1881 census, there is a Charlie John ROWNEY (aged 3) recorded at the home of John HARPIN (aged 52) and his wife Sarah (aged 47) in the village of Stevington, in Bedfordshire. Charlie is described as a nephew. He was born at Cudworth, near Roystone, in Yorkshire. John HARPIN was born in Stevington and Sarah was born in the village of Goldington, in Bedfordshire. Charlie is believed to have been a son of a Richard ROWNEY of Halesowen, Worcestershire, and his wife Susan. It is not known, but does not seem likely, that Richard ROWNEY was related to our family. In the 1891 census, William (aged 43) and Emma (aged 42) were living at 4 Senior Lane in Roystone. William was working as a colliery labourer. Their children who were at home at that time were; Edith (aged 13) and Mary (aged 1). William's bachelor brother Charles (aged 38) was also boarding with their family. Charles was also employed as a colliery labourer. In the 1901 census, William (aged 52) and Emma (aged 51) were living on Midland Road in Roystone. William was employed as a colliery banksman above ground. Their daughter Mary (aged 11) was also still at home. The fates of William and Emma have not yet been determined. |
