Note | Charles was born around 1801 in the village of Escourt, in Wiltshire, England. Not a great deal is known directly about Charles and his family. Most of the information is pieced together from circumstantial and incidental information, so should be treated with caution. Charles seems to have been married around 1820 to a girl named Sarah, who was born around 1803. No information regarding their marriage has been identified. The assumed marriage date is an estimation based solely on the birth of their first child. Charles would have been around 19 years old and Sarah around 17 years of age at that time. Charles and Sarah's first child is believed to have been Thomas Edward who was born in Escourt around 1820. Their second son George was born in Escourt around 1822. He was followed by William who was born there around 1823, and Alfred, who was born in Escourt around 1827. In the 1841 census, Charles (aged 40+) and Sarah (aged 35+) were recorded in the village of Escourt (Eastcourt) in the parish of Crudwell, in the Malmesbury registration district of Wiltshire. Charles was a farmer. They had two of their sons living with them at that time; William (aged 18) and Alfred (aged 13). There was an Elizabeth POULTON (aged 16) who was employed as a servant for the PAINTER family at Stone Hill Farm at nearby Charlton in Wiltshire. Her age and proximity suggest she may have been a daughter of Charles and Sarah. There was a Charles POULTON who died in the June quarter of 1849 in the Malmesbury registration district in Wiltshire. It is not confirmed that this was our Charles, but it seems likely. He would have been around 48 years of age at that time. In the 1861 census, there was a widow named Sarah POULTON (aged 58) living in Escourt. She was living in and running a grocer's shop in Escourt. The only other member of her household was a girl Eleanor Sarah POULTON (aged 13) who was born in Corston, Wiltshire, and was described as Sarah's grand daughter. It is not known for sure if this Sarah POULTON was the widowed wife of Charles, although her age and circumstances do seem to support it. It is also unclear who the parents of her granddaughter may have been. Sarah claimed to have been born in Crudwell. (See the children of Sarah's brother-in-law Thomas POULTON for some speculation regarding Eleanor Sarah's connection to the family). Sarah seems to have died in the December quarter of 1865 in the Malmesbury registration district. She would have been around 62 years of age at that time. Her death information has not been confirmed but seems likely. |
