Note

During his life James resided at Bowden (SA), Owen (SA), and Croydon (SA), in the colony of South Australia.

James was recorded in the first assessment book of the District of Dalkey (SA), near Owen, in 1875/76, as the owner of section 279, which consisted of 148 acres of land situated on the Stockyard Creek. The rates payable for that year were 8/5d. His brothers, William and Charles, also owned land in the district at that time, with John and Ted taking up land there the following year.

James and his family were living at Dalkey in 1878 when their daughter Jessie died, but she died while they were staying at Mallala (SA).

In 1880/81, James sold section 279 at Dalkey to a man named James CAMPBELL, and purchased section 348, which was only about 2 miles south of the Owen township. James sold his land to W. NEEDS in 1891. He probably returned permanently to the Adelaide (SA) area around this time, where he took over a dairy farm near Brompton (SA)..

After returning to Adelaide, James built a house at 192 Torrens Road, Renown Park (SA), in the area around North Adelaide. His unmarried daughter, Ruby, was still living in the house in her old age. It was eventually purchased by the Roads Board and pulled down to make room for road alterations.

James and his brother William are also believed to have worked together in a partnership making bricks at Brompton, after they returned from Owen.
