Note | William was born in 1850 in the village of North Nibley, in Gloucestershire, England. During his life William variously lived at Bowden (SA), Owen (SA), and Brompton Park (SA), in the colony of South Australia. William, along with his brothers James and Charles, were the first of the POULTON brothers to take up land in the Hundred of Dalkey (SA), around Owen. William was recorded in the assessment book for the District of Dalkey in 1875/76 as the owner of section 291, which was located 5 miles south of Owen, and section 432, near the township of Pinery (SA). He paid 7/6d in rates for that year. Charles owned section 292 adjacent to the former of William's blocks. The following year the remaining POULTON brothers, John and Ted, also took up land in the area. In 1881/82, William purchased two more sections of land, bringing his total holdings in the area to 674 acres. He subsequently sold these two blocks to James COOK, who later sold them to John VERCO. All the brothers retained property in the district until at least 1891, when James sold up his property and left. William and Ted held onto their remaining property until as late as 1904/05, when they finally sold up, but they had not been in occupation for some years prior to their sales. William sold section 291 to John VERCO and section 432 to P.H. LAFFER. William and James are believed to have departed Dalkey around 1891 and returned to Brompton (SA), near Adelaide (SA), where the entered into a partnership operating a kiln and brickyard. William was living at Ovingham (SA) at the time of his death in 1915. He died at the age of 65 in an asylum at the hospital in Eastwood (SA). He was buried in the Hindmarsh Cemetery. |
