Note | Alfred was born around 1827 in the village of Escourt, in the parish of Crudwell, in Wiltshire, England. In 1856, Alfred married Susannah SAUNDERS in the parish of Crudwell. In the 1861 census, Alfred (aged 33) and Susannah (aged 23) were living at Escourt Field Farm in Escourt. Alfred was described as a farmer of 158 acres employing 4 men and 2 boys. They had three daughters; Madeleine (aged 3), Elizabeth (aged 2), and baby Sarah Ann (aged 10 months). They also had two servants living at their home; their dairy maid Fanny NOSS (aged 16) and their nurse maid Mary Ann SAUNDERS (aged 11), who may have been related to Susannah. In the 1881 census, Alfred (aged 52) and Susannah (aged 43) were living at Cloatly Manor Farm, near Hankerton, in Wiltshire. Alfred was described as a farmer of 160 acres employing one man. Their children at that time were; Elizabeth (aged 20), Emily (aged 17), and Alfred (aged 13). Alfred and Susannah emigrated with their children to the United States. They appear to have made their home in the state of Illinois. Susannah died in 1897 in the town of Winnebago, Illinois. She was around 60 years of age. Alfred died in 1900 when he was around 73 years old. Alfred's family seem to have eventually settled around the town of Rockford in Illinois. There is a Poulton Cemetery at Rockford. NOTE: An online note gives the names of Alfred and Susannah's children as; Melissa, Elizabeth, Amy, Emily, and Charles. These do not all match the names given at birth and recorded in census returns in England, so it is unclear whether a mistake may have been made in some cases here or whether the names given represent informal name variations used by the family. |
