Note | The 1912 electoral roll indicates that Ernest and Frances were farming at Goyura West (Vic), near Hopetoun (Vic), at that time. OBITUARY - Mr E.W. POULTON "It is with unfeigned regret that we are compelled to chronicle the death at the comparatively early age of 31 years of Mr. Ernest Walter POULTON (known to many as "Jim"), second son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles POULTON, of Hopetoun. The death, which caused a sorrowful feeling right throughout the district, occurred on Wednesday of last week, 16th inst., as briefly mentioned in our last issue. On February 20th, 1912, deceased was married to Miss Frances LAVERY, and today five boys (the eldest 8 years of age and the youngest 1 year and 9 months) and a grief-stricken wife are left to mourn the loss of a devoted father and faithful husband. The deceased, who was born on the 11th January, 1890, at Dalkey, near Owen was a most respected farmer of this district, and was of such a nature that he made friends with whom he came in contact, and had no enemies. He was always ready to do anyone a good turn and offer help where needed. His leading sport was football and always took a deep interest in the local club, and during the 1919 and 1920 seasons was a member of the selection committee. It was at his own request that he did not occupy a similar position during the past season. He was also a member of the local A.P. Society and for several years acted as a steward. His demise came as a painful shock to all as it was only 13 days from the time he became ill till he passed into the great beyond. About nine days previous to his death he was taken to Sister CUMMING's Private Hospital at Hopetoun, suffering from pneumonia and pleurisy. The crisis was past on the Friday and he was gradually improving. On the day of his death he was even better, but after tea he complained of pains which quickly grew worse and he passed away at 8.30 o'clock, the cause of death being heart failure. The deepest sympathy of many goes out to the widow, the children, the parents, the brothers , the sisters, and other relatives, and the only hope is that time - the great healer - will alleviate the distressing wrench. The funeral, which was one of the largest yet seen in Hopetoun, left his late residence at 10 a.m. on Friday morning last and passed through Hopetoun shortly after 11 o'clock. The coffin was covered with beautiful floral tributes. The service at the graveside was conducted by Rev. F.F. FELL, whilst Bro. Roy PATLAND, Chief Ruler of the local I.O.R. Lodge, of which deceased was a member, read the Rechabite service. The coffin-bearers were Messrs. G.G MARSHMAN, Rex BELLENGER, W.E. BROWN, T. BURDETT, H.O. DANIEL and L.J. COLLINS, whilst the pall-bearers were Messrs. A. O'LOUGHLIN, Geo. SMITH, E.J. VIVIAN, Alex. MITCHELL, E.E. PERRY carried out the mortuary arrangements." |
