Note | William was born around 1754 in the town of Gamlingay, in Cambridgeshire, England. His mother seems to have died around the same time as his birth, so it is suggested that she may have died as a result of complications in childbirth. William disappears from the family records around the same time, so it is not known whether he died in infancy, was raised by other relatives or friends after his mother's death, or whether he has simply left no trace of his whereabouts in later years. One highly speculative possibility is that this was the same person who was later raised as Thomas ROWNEY. The birth of Thomas has not been documented, and his stated age exactly corresponds to that of William. This is a complication in sequencing the relationship between his father George ROWNEY and supposed mother, Elizabeth CULLIP. Perhaps after moving in with George following Anne's death, the new born baby, recently christened as William, was renamed after Elizabeth's own father, Thomas CULLIP. This might also explain why Thomas ROWNEY himself was apparently never christened. |
