Note | Thomas was probably born in 1786 around the city of Bedford, in Bedfordshire, England. His father was an overseer on a farm in that area. Thomas is believed to have served in the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars as a member of the Light Dragoons Regiment (possibly for a time with the 2nd or 7th Dragoons). His sister Ann GREEN later claimed that Thomas had run away from an apprenticeship to join the army as a young man. Thomas may have fought at the Battle of Waterloo. This story was recalled by one of his nephews many years later, but has not been confirmed. The nephew was of the opinion that he had been killed at Waterloo, which does not seem to have been the case. His sister Ann stated quite plainly, in later years, that she had five living brothers when she left England in 1819, which would suggest that Thomas was still alive (and in fact believed to have been serving with the 2nd Light Dragoons) at that time. Thomas' fate has not yet been determined. |
