Note | 1824 QUARTER SESSIONS ROLLS (Bedfordshire) - QSR/26/1824/381 [n.d.] Examinations and depositions: Information of Eliz. MOTHERS, Cardington; her husband Wm. labr. came home "rather forward in beer" and accused her of "going after other men. I called him a jealous-headed Devil. Then I said, I would leave him.... he seized me with one hand, and took up his thatching needle from under the bed and he began to stab me with it, he made five wounds on me, some blood came from the wound in my breast, and also from the two wounds in my arm". She got away from him and went to her neighbour's house, Mrs. GURNEY. Later her wounds were dressed by Mr. HURST. Information of Isaac HURST, Bedford, surgeon; he went out immediately he was called to Cardington. He found Eliz. MOTHERS sitting up in bed "faint and much agitated"; he found five superficial wounds. "The wounds were all small"; he dressed them and "gave he soothing medicines: none of the wounds appeared to me to be dangerous. She is now fast recovering and will soon be well". Information of Wm. ROWNEY, Cardington; he was passing MOTHER's house and heard the man and his wife quarrelling "I stood awhile and heard William MOTHERS say..... Betty you want me to hit you but I won't. They kept on quarrelling and I went away - but I soon heard her hollow out "Murder" two or three times". He then saw her come out of the house holding her breast from which blood was coming, followed by her husband who said he was going to "resign" himself to Mr. CRANFIELD, the constable. Information of Jn. CRANFIELD, Cardington, constable; summoned by Hen. HILL to take MOTHERS into custody. On their way to a J.P., MOTHERS said he hoped he had not killed his wife. In the 1861 census, William (aged 57) and Mary (aged 55) were living on Fenlake Road, in Fenlake, Bedfordshire, England. William was working as a cable dealer. Their unmarried son, John (aged 21) was also at their home. He was employed as a general labourer.
