Note | Mary was born around 1795 in the village of Goldington, in Bedfordshire, England. Mary's father died in 1801 when she was around 5 years old. Her mother never remarried and appears to have continued raising her family in Goldington thereafter. Mary was married to William CHAPMAN in 1816, in Goldington. Mary would have been around 20 years of age at that time, and William was around 24 years old. William was a shoemaker by trade. Mary and William had only one known child, John, who was born around 1828 in Bedfordshire. In the 1841 census, Mary (aged 45) and William (aged 49) were living in Goldington. William was working as a shoemaker. Their son, John (aged (13), was present at their home and was a shoemaker's apprentice at that time. John may have been working with his father. Mary's elderly widowed mother, Susan ROWNEY (aged 70), was also present. She was described as a pauper. In addition, Mary's niece, Mary YARRELL (aged 11), was also staying with their family at that time. Young Mary's mother had died in 1838, and her father was yet to be remarried. In the 1851 census, Mary (aged 55) and William (aged 60) were still living in Goldington. It appears that Mary YARRELL (aged 20) was still living with them at that time. Her father had remarried around 1849, so it would seem that she did not return to his household at that time. In the 1861 census, Mary (aged 65) was still living in Goldington. She was working as a shoe binder. The census return seems to indicate that she was still married, but her husband William was not recorded at the address, and he has not yet been located elsewhere in the census. Mary was the sole occupant of her home. Her niece, Mary YARRELL (aged 31), was by that time living some distance away, at Salford, in Bedfordshire. She was still unmarried and was also working as a shoe binder. William probably died in the Bedford Registration District in 1873 at the age of 80, although there is another possible entry from 1883 (aged 88) which might also have been him. Mary died in the Bedford Registration District in 1875 at the age of 80. |
