Note | Samuel was born around 1826 in the village of Colmworth, in Bedfordshire, England.. His mother died in 1838 when he would have been around 12 years of age. He appears to have remained around Colmworth after his mother's passing, but his exact circumstances are not known. His father appears to have remarried in 1849 in the city of Bedford. There is a record in the IGI of marriage banns for Samuel and Eliza WOODS beginning on 11 Aug 1850 in the parish of Colmworth. Eliza (or Elizabeth as she is sometimes known) was the daughter of Samuel WOODS and was originally from the village of Swineshead, in Bedfordshire. Samuel and Eliza were formally married on 27 October 1850 in Colmworth. They appear to have settled around Colmworth after their marriage, with their first known child, William, born there around 1852. Their next child, James, was also born there around 1853. Their first daughter, Mary, was believed to have been born in the village of Eaton around 1855, however by 1857, when Edith was born, they were back in Colmworth again. Their son John was born at Colmworth in 1859. In the 1861 census, Samuel (aged 35) and Eliza (aged 28) were living in the 'River House' at Roxton Village, in the village of Roxton, near Bedford, in Bedfordshire. Samuel was employed as an agricultural labourer and Eliza was working as a lace maker. They had five children by that time; William (aged 9) who was working as a farmers boy, James (aged 8) and Mary (aged 6) who were attending school, and the two youngest, Edith (aged 4) and John (aged 1). From the births of their children we can surmise that the YARRELL family left Bedfordshire sometime after 1861 and had settled in the rural district of Elloe, near Deeping St Nicholas, in Lincolnshire, by 1867, when their son Samuel was born. Two further children followed, Sarah in 1870, and Ellen in 1873. In the 1881 census, Samuel (aged 55) and Eliza (aged 49) were living at Elloe. Samuel was employed as an agricultural labourer. Their children at home at that time were; Samuel (aged 14) who was also employed as an agricultural labourer, and Sarah (aged 10) and Ellen (aged 8) who were attending school. Their son James (aged 28) was unmarried and boarding at the house next door with a shepherd named John BREWIN (aged 44) and his wife, who appear to have been running a private boarding house. James was also working as an agricultural labourer. Samuel died in the March quarter of 1886 in the Spalding registration district, in Lincolnshire. This district included Deeping St Nicholas. Eliza's fate has not yet been determined. |
