Note | John was born around 1828 in the village of Goldington, in Bedfordshire, England. His father was a shoemaker. He was the only known child of his parents, but his cousin, Mary YARRELL, who was around the same age as himself, came to live with his family after her mother died in 1838. John married Hannah ODELL in the March quarter of 1851 in the Bedford registration district, which included the village of Goldington. He was around 23 years old at that time and Hannah was around 20 years of age. She was from the town of Newport Pagnell, in nearby Buckinghamshire. John and Hannah's only known child, Elizabeth, was born around 1854 in Goldington. In the 1861 census, John (aged 33) and Hannah (aged 32) were living at the parsonage in Goldington. John was making a living as a shoemaker and was also serving as the parish clerk. Hannah was also earning an income as a dressmaker. Their daughter, Elizabeth (aged 7), was attending school. In the 1881 census, John (aged 51) and Hannah (aged 50) were living at the Post Office, located at 13 Barker's Lane, in Goldington. John was employed as a shoemaker and the acting postmaster, while Hannah was the postmistress. John died between 1881 and 1891, but the details and exact timing of his death are not known at this time. In the 1891 census, Hannah (aged 60) was widowed and living in Goldington. She was described as living "on her own means". She had three visitors at her home at the time of the census; Elizabeth O. PEARSE (aged 26), an unmarried governess who was originally from Brighton, in Sussex; Alice O.C. PEARSE (aged 23), a married woman who was born in Goldington; and Elizabeth O. CHAPMAN (aged 6 months), a baby who was born in New York (USA). At least some of these people are probably related to Hannah, but the exact connection has not yet been determined. Hannah may have been living in Hertford, in Hertfordshire, at the time of the 1901 census. This has not been confirmed. Hannah's fate has not yet been determined. |
