He has been included on the basis of his birth date and place of birth as recorded in the 1881 census. In the 1881 census, James (aged 54) was lodging at 2 Allhallows Lane, in Bedford Saint Paul, in Bedfordshire. He appears to have been staying with a group of labourers at a lodging house. He was married at that time. His wife Lucy (aged 49) appears to have been a housekeeper and was recorded at the residence of a widowed shoemaker named William JOHNSON (aged 64), which was located at 12 Harpur Street, Paradine Court, in Bedford Saint Paul. James died in 1887 at the age of 59. In the 1891 census, Lucy (aged 59) was widowed and still living with William JOHNSON (aged 74). They were living at 14 Dane Street, in Bedford St Paul. William was described as a retired shoemaker, and Lucy as his servant (charwoman). Lucy's son was also a lodger at the premises, Arthur ORPHIN (aged 33), who was described as an unmarried labourer. |
