In the 1891 census, Thomas (aged 24) and Kate (aged 19) were living in a cottage on Silver Street, in the village of Stevington, in Bedfordshire. Thomas was employed as a railway labourer and Kate was a lace maker. They also had a baby son, Walter (aged 10 months).

IN the 1901 census, Thomas (aged 34) and Kate (aged 29) were living at 23 Silver Street, in Stevington. Thomas was working as a gravel digger, and Kate was earning an income making lace pillows. They had two children; Walter (aged 10) and Beatrice (aged 7) who were both attending school.
