Note | Thomas was probably born around 1829 in the village of Stevington, in Bedfordshire, England. In 1847, he was married to Maria BOWYER in Stevington. He was around 18 years old at that time and Maria seems to have been about 25 years of age. She was also from Stevington. After their marriage, Thomas probably continued working around Stevington as an agricultural labourer, and he and Maria raised their family there over the following years. In the March quarter of 1867, Thomas died at 42 years of age. He died in the Bedford registration district, which included the village of Stevington. He left Maria widowed with a large family to care for. Fortunately the older children would have been old enough, by that time, to be of assistance in providing for their younger siblings. In the 1871 census, the widowed Maria (aged 45) was still living in Stevington with her nine children, who at that time were; Priscilla (aged 22), George (aged 20), Emma (aged 15), Alfred (aged 13), Ezra (aged 13), Ada (aged 11), William (aged 9), Walter (aged 7), and Thomas (aged 4). They were living next door to the children's grandfather, John ROWNEY (aged 76). Their aunt, Susan ROWNEY (aged 48), was also apparently living with John, as were a number of Susan's children and grandchildren. In 1873, Maria was remarried, to Joel HULATT, in the Bedford registration district. Maria would have been around 50 years old at that time. Joel HULATT was a 60 year old widower from Stevington with at least one child from his previous relationship, a daughter named Mary, who would have been around 17 years old at that time. In the 1881 census, Maria (aged 59) and Joel (aged 68) were living in a cottage on Silver Street, in Stevington. Joel was employed as an agricultural labourer and Maria was working as a lace maker. Four of Maria's unmarried sons were still living with them at that time; Alfred (aged 24), William (aged 19), Walter (aged 17), and Thomas (aged 15). They were all employed as agricultural labourers. Joel HULATT died in the June quarter of 1887, in the Bedford registration district, at the age of 71. In the 1891 census, Maria (aged 63) was still living in her cottage on Silver Street, in Stevington. She was a widow and was working as a lace maker. Her unmarried son, William (aged 28), was living with her. He was employed as a mat maker. Maria's fate has not yet been determined. |
