| Note | May was born around Hopetoun (Vic) in 1903. In 1920, she married Frederick CARMES, when she was around 17 years of age. Frederick was about 21 years old. Frederick and May appear to have initially lived around Hopetoun after their marriage. Their first child, Iris was born there in 1920. Their movements after that time are not clear, although they seem to have remained in north-west Victoria, the birth places of their subsequent children have not yet been determined. Their daughter Merle was born in 1922, and Roma followed in 1923. Their only son, Keith, was born in 1930. In 1934, May died at Mildura (Vic). Her age was recorded as 34 at the time of her death, but it would appear that she was just 31 years of age. She was buried in the cemetery at Hopetoun. Her family at that time would have been her husband Frederick (aged 35) and their four children, Iris (aged 14), Merle (aged 12), Roma (aged 11) and Keith (aged 4). It does not appear that Frederick remarried. Merle died just a few years later, in 1937, when she was 14 years old. Frederick died in 1942 at Williamstown (Vic), near Melbourne (Vic), when he was 43 years of age. With the loss of both parents, the family now comprised just the three surviving children; Iris (aged 22), Roma (aged 19), and Keith (aged 12). The circumstances of the children immediately after Frederick's death is not known. Iris was married to Clive CHARLES, the following year, in 1943. The other siblings possibly lived with them for a time. Roma married in 1948 and Keith in 1953. |
