Note

Mary married Thomas CLAYTON in the December quarter of 1837 in Bedford District, Bedfrodshire, England.

In the 1841 census, Thomas (aged 20+) and Mary (aged 20+) were living in the village of Thurleigh, in Bedfordshire. Thomas was employed as an agricultural laborer. Their only child at that time was son Jesse (aged 8 months). They were living next door to Thomas' brother, William CLAYTON (or CLEATON) and his family, and next door to them, was the home of their parents, Thomas CLAYTON (aged 60+) and Sarah (aged (60+). Two of Thomas' sisters, Mary and Sarah, were still living with their parents. All the menfolk were employed as agricultural labourers.

Mary CLAYTON died in the September quarter of 1844 in the Bedford District, Bedfordshire. She possibly died in childbirth, as her son John is believed to have been born around that time.

Note: The IGI and the book 'South Australians 1836-1885' both suggest that her name was Jane WITTINGTON, however the registration information and 1841 census return seem quite convincing.
