Jane's surname is variously given as TRENNEAR, TRENEAR, TRUNNEAR, TROUNIER, and TRONNIER. Her mother Caroline's maiden name is also variously given as SONDFUS, SONDFUHS, SENDFUCHS, and SONDFUCHS. The latter two variations seem to be the most likely to be correct, since they appear with the full names of both parents in their apparently German guise, rather than the Anglicised names which usually appear elsewhere. Jane herself seems to have used the Anglicised surname almost exclusively.

Jane's parents had a couple of children in the wild north-west Murray-Burra region of South Australia in the early 1850's, but they seem to have returned to Adelaide (SA) around 1854. Jane's birth does not seem to have been recorded. It is possible that she was born before the family arrived in South Australia, or perhaps her birth may simply have not been registered. The births of her siblings in 1850, 1851, 1854, 1856, and 1858, do not really help to clarify her actual age. Both the 1848 and 1852 alternatives seem plausible.
