Note | Tpr. John Squire Underdown ROWNEY (No. 1041) served in the Australia Army during the Great War. He enlisted at Oakland (SA) on 14 Jan 1915 and served in the 3rd Light Horse Brigade. He was described as 5'10ư" with brown hair, grey eyes, and a dark complexion on enlistment. He claimed to have had three years prior experience in the Light Horse at Bordertown (SA) before enlisting. He was not married when he enlisted and his mother was named as his next of kin. They were both living in Bordertown at that time. John embarked for overseas service on 24 Jun 1915, sailing from Adelaide (SA) aboard the transport A61 HMAT "Kanowna". He departed with the 7th Reinforcement for the 9th Light Horse Regiment, in the 3rd Brigade. He arrived at Gallipoli on 2 Oct 1915. He was hospitalised sick with diptheria on 15 Dec 1915 on the island of Mudros. He was transferred to Alexandria in Egypt on 11 Jan 1916. John was returned to duty on 26 Jan 1916 at Helipolis in Egypt, for training, but after several further stints in hospital over the following weeks he was classified as an invalid with post diptheritic debility on 11 Apr 1916. He sailed for Australia on 12 Apr 1916 aboard the vessel HT "Karoola" for three months furlough, but was eventually granted a discharged from service on 4 Aug 1916 as medically unfit. He was described as of good character at that time. He was granted a pension of £3 per fortnight from 5 Aug 1916. |
