Note | Assisted Passage Records - Application No. 4912 David GRAY (Dorset), age 17, single, General Emigrant (agricultural labourer), left Plymouth on the Electric, 1 Jul 1865. Amount paid by Emigrant -,£1. Selecting agent - Charles MOORE. David owned 9 acres (Block 47/Section 310) in Campbelltown (SA). He sold this block to John GILLINGS in 1884. He later resided at Stirling (SA) for a time before settling around Macclesfield (SA). OBITUARY [Adelaide Observer, 29 May 1920, p. 13] "The late Mr. D.J. GRAY, whose death was reported recently, was born in Dorsetshire, England on December 9, 1848. He came to this state in the ship "Electric" in 1864, and married a daughter of the late Mr. William ROWNEY, of Campbelltown, in which district he resided for a time. Later deceased lived at Stirling East, and finally took up farming at Macclesfield, where he remained for 37 years. Mr. GRAY took an active part in movements for the welfare of the district. He was a member of the District Council for many years, and for some time was Chairman. He was a member of the 1.0. Foresters (Payneham branch) for 50 years, and also a great Rechabite advocate. Mr. GRAY was founder of the Macclesfield Star of South Tent, of which order he was a member for 40 years. Deceased sold his farm about 12 months ago, and transferred to Forestville. He has left a widow, four daughters, five sons, and 17 grandchildren." |
