Note | William was born around 1732 in the town of Biggleswade, in Bedfordshire. He was the eldest of his parents, Patrick and Ann ROWNEY's four known children. The date of his christening there in 1732 is sometimes given one year earlier, indicating that the changing calendar has been taken into consideration and that his christening occurred in the 1731/32 year. This has also been noted for his other known siblings. It seems likely that William's family remained settled around Biggleswade at least until he and his siblings were adults. William's brother Thomas appears to have settled there permanently and lived out his life in that town. In 1758, William was married to Ann ROBINSON, from the village of Willington, in Bedfordshire. William would have been around 26 years old at that time, and Ann would have been about 23 years of age. They were married in Ann's local parish, but afterwards appear to have settled in the village of Southill, just a few miles from Biggleswade, in Bedfordshire. All of their known children were christened at Southill. William and Ann had 8 known children; Patrick (b.1759), William (b.1761), John (b.1764), Thomas (b.1766), Sarah (b.1767), George (b.1770), James (b.1773), and Samuel (b.1775). William ROWNEY was named as one of the occupants of a property at West End, in Southill, on a deed dated 15 Sep 1772. The land and buildings, which included a walled garden, were sold by George NODES of Southill on that date to George BYNG, 4th Viscount Torrington, of Wrotham Park, Middlesex. The occupants of the property were named as Thomas FULLWOOD, Thomas. WILLSON, John WATTFORD, Thomas SAOUDERS, William OSBORN, George OSBORN, Thomas CLIFTON, William ROWNEY, Thomas ENDERSBY, and Thomas ROBINSON. Some of these men may have been relatives of the ROWNEY family. William died in 1797, when he was around 65 years of age. Ann's fate is not known. NOTE: A William ROWNEY reportedly of Langford was chosen by lot to serve in the British Army in February 1763. It is not known whether it was this man, however only one other reasonable alternative has been identified. William does not seem to have spent any length of time away from his family, if the births of his children around that time are any indication, whereas the other man from Potton was yet to be married, so perhaps it may seem more likely to have been the other man, but since Southill is closer to Langford (where this man's father was born), and the other man's family has no connection to Langford at all, this cannot really be taken for granted. |
