Note | William was born at 3am on 26 May 1849 in the hamlet of Upper Caldecote, in the parish of Northill, in Bedfordshire, England. There is no christian name recorded on his birth certificate, and there is also a possible suggestion that he may have been a surviving twin. He is believed to have married Amelia STOKES in Northill around 1879. They had a child, Alfred, who was born in the December quarter of 1880 in Upper Caldecote. Amelia is understood to have died about two weeks after Alfred was born, possibly from complications. In the 1881 census, William (aged 32) was staying at his parents home at No. 3 Taddys Row, on Northill Road in Upper Caldecote. He was escribed as a market gardener at that time. His baby son Alfred (aged 5 months) was also present and is believed to have been subsequently raised by William's parents. In 1882, William was married to Mary Anne NOTTINGHAM of Old Warden, in Bedfordshire. They were married in Northill. William would have been 33 years old at that time and Mary Anne was 21 years of age. They appear to have settled in Lower Caldecote after their marriage and had three children; Mary who was born in 1883, Maud in 1885, and son David around 1887. William later worked for the Bedfordshire County Council cleaning and maintaining roads. William died in 1930 in Upper Caldecote at the age of 81. He was buried in the churchyard at Upper Caldecote. He requested a grave as near to the road as possible. Mary Anne died in 1941 in Upper Caldecote at the age of 79. She was buried beside William at Upper Caldecote, as was their daughter Maud, who died in 1962. Their graves are unmarked. |
