In the 1881 census, Samuel (aged 45) and Emma (aged 50) were living on Bedford Road, in Cardington, Bedfordshire. Samuel was employed as a fitter in an iron foundry. Their children who were present were; William (aged 18) who was an agricultural labourer, and Ada (aged 14) and Arthur (aged 9) who were both attending school.
