Note | William is believed to have been born around 1827 in the parish of Northill, in Bedfordshire, England. His birth was recorded in the parish of Northill in that year. William married Betsy TINGEY in Northill in 1847. In the 1851 census, William (aged 26) and Betsy (aged 22) were living in the hamlet of Upper Caldecote, in the parish of Northill. William seems to have earned his living as a gardener and also kept a beer house. Their baby daughter Sarah (aged 9 months) was also present. They also accommodated a lodger named William LINDON (aged 79) who was a batchelor and worked as a gardener. In the 1861 census, William (aged 34) and Betsy (aged 33) were living in Lower Caldecote. William was described as a gardener. Their children at that time were; Mary (aged 8), Alice (aged 7), and James (aged 4), who were attending school, and Arthur (aged 1) who was at home. In the 1871 census, William (aged 44) and Betsy (aged 43) were living at No. 3 Junction Row, in Wichnor, Staffordshire, England. William was employed as a railway engine fitter. Their unmarried children who were present for the census were; Alice (aged 15), James (aged 14), Arthur (aged 11), Henry (aged 9), Edith (aged 7), Ernest (aged 5), and Gertrude (aged 2). William died in an accident while working on a neighbouring farm with two of his sons in 1878. One of the sons was Henry. They were cleaning out a cesspool. The two brothers left their father for short while, and when they returned they found him dead, having fallen into the pit. An inquest was held at the Kings Head in Lower Caldecote, Bedfordshire. William was buried in the churchyard at Upper Caldecote. In the 1881 census, Betsy (aged 53) was widowed and living in North Road Cottage, in the village of Northill, in Bedfordshire, England. She was described as a farmer of 9 acres. Five of her unmarried children were at home at that time; Alice (aged 35) who was a cook in domestic service, Arthur (aged 21) was an agricultural labourer, Edith (aged 17) was a domestic housemaid, Ernest (aged 15) was an agricultural labourer, and Gertrude (aged 12) was attending school. Betsy died in 1890 when she was around 60 years of age. She was buried with William in the churchyard at Upper Caldecote. |
