Marriage | Sarah ROUNE |
Note | Sarah's age is open to question. The unsourced marriage data from the IGI gives a date of birth for the bride around 1670 and the groom around 1692. Her death details are linked to the 1697 birthdate, which seems more plausible. It is not clear whether the bride's birth details are in error on the marriage record, or whether the marriage record itself is erroneously associated with this couple. It is possible that Sarah's husband's father may have remarried to a woman named Sarah and the details have become confused. This is supported by the fact that this couple were having children at least three years before the marriage date given. There was a Sarah WRIGHT christened in Langford on 10 Oct 1670. She was the daughter of John and Sarah WRIGHT. There was a Sarah ROUNE of Biggleswade who married a man named Philip LEWIS of Hatfield HERTS. at Biggleswade on 19 Feb 1739. This could have been the spinster daughter of John and Judith who would have been around 45 years old at that time, or possibly a widow or daughter of a ROWNEY son. There has been some confusion of dates between the family of George ROWNEY at Dunton and Sarah ROWNEY of Langford, which might suggest that further investigation of possible links between John and Sarah ROWNEY and Dunton would be worthwhile. It is also possible that the above Sarah of Biggleswade may have been the 15 year old daughter of George ROWNEY of Dunton, if the death of Sarah in Dunton proves to have been the wife of John. Sarah ROWNEY of Langford was a widow when she was buried there on 12 Dec 1757. Note this contradicts the marriage to Philip LEWIS in 1739. Both cannot be the same Sarah ROWNEY. So there are at least two distinct adult women named Sarah ROWNEY living in the area in 1739. There was also an infant named Susan ROWNEY who was buried in Biggleswade on 11 Apr 1720, and an Elizabeth ROWNEY buried there on 15 Dec 1737, just a few months before a John ROWNEY on 19 Mar 1737. There was a child, Elizabeth ROWNEY, who was baptised in Langford on 15 Apr 1733, who was described as a "bastard daughter of the widow ROWNEY". So the widow ROWNEY of Langford seems to have been widowed before 1733, which suggests that it was most likely her husband John ROWNEY who was buried in 1727 in Langford. |
