Note

Ben grew up in the Green Hills (SA) district of South Australia where his father was a blacksmith with a small farming allotment.

Sometime during the 1870s, probably around 1877, Ben and some of his brothers moved across from South Australia to the Noradjuha (Vic) area in north-west Victoria.

Ben was married at the St John's Church in Horsham (Vic), in 1879, to Jane McCREDDEN. He was then aged 24, and Jane was about 18 years old. Their children born over the following years until 1886, were registered at Natimuk (Vic). They appear to have moved down to the region around Clear Lake (Vic) for a couple of years after that, then northwards again to Kaniva (Vic), where they appear to have stayed for a few years between 1890 to 1893.

An entry in the family bible indicates that Ben and his wife Jane arrived at Goruya (Vic) in 1893, where Ben owned and operated a butcher's shop. A further entry states that in 1903 he also acqired land at Hopetoun West (Vic). Ben also owned other land east of Goruya. Records show that Ben purchased land in the parish of Lowan (Vic) on 19 Sep 1894. Their farms were in a prosperous area, and Ben and Jane's four sons all helped to manage them. Ben donated part of his land for the site of a state school. The school building was also used for social events and hosted church services for the Methodist congregation. The building was formally opened by Ben himself, and he named the site "Echunga" after the place of his residence in South Australia.

The electoral rolls of Victoria for 1899 and 1903 record that Ben and Jane were farmers at Goyura (Vic).

The 1912 electoral roll records that Ben and Jane were farming at Hopetoun.

Ben died from asthma at the age of 79. Probate was granted on 6 Jul 1834. People who knew him remembered him as a placid man who enjoyed helping his relatives, friends, and neighbours. Ben and Jane's family tree consists of well over 240 direct descendants.
