Note

Ada was born at Natimuk (Vic) in 1886. Her family moved around for some years shortly after her birth, eventually settling at Goyura (Vic) in the farming district near Hopetoun (Vic) by 1893.

In 1905, Ada married Robert HATCHER at her father's home at Goyura. She was 19 years old and Robert was 23 years of age. Robert was a farmer from Goyura. They were married by the Baptist Minister, Thomas NICHOLS. The witnesses were Alick Benjamin COOK and Thomas Stafford HATCHER.

A few months after their marriage, Ada and Robert had a daughter, Tress, whose birth was registered at Woomelang (Vic) in 1906.

It is believed that Ada and Robert's relationship may have been troubled by an alcohol problem, although the details are unclear. It seems they eventually parted ways, and were divorced, although the timing of their divorce has not been determined.

After separating from Robert, Ada and Tress returned to live with her parents at the COOK's farm near Hopetoun. Ada is said to have been treated coldly by her mother, like a maid, because her mother did not approve of the divorce and had felt that Ada had a duty to stay with her husband. Apparently, the rest of the family were much kinder, her younger sisters adored her, and her father was also very understanding. It has been suggested that Ada may have inherited some of her mother's stubborn character in this respect. She was strict in her opposition to alcohol and smoking, and could be a very hard task master, but she was a devoted mother all the same.

In 1915, Ada married Rod ROWNEY. They were probably married at Hopetoun. Rod had a farm nearby at Dattuck (Vic). Both she and Rod would have been around 29 years old at that time, and Tress was around 9 years of age.

They raised their family on their farm at Dattuck, and later retired to Warracknabeal (Vic).

Rod died in 1964 at Warracknabeal and was buried at Hopetoun.

Ada died in the Warracknabeal Hospital in 1970 at the age of 84. She suffered from alzheimers disease near the end of her life and was unable to even recognize her own son Jack, who visited her weekly at the hospital. She was buried with Rod at Hopetoun.
